Pruzin Park Master Plan
Schererville, IN
The Arsh Group Inc. prepared a new master plan for a site consisting of an existing park, vacant land, and part of Merrillville Intermediate School (MIS) campus. The site, approximately 95 acres, is comprised of varied sensitive land, open space, and recreational areas. The primary goal of the plan was to create a new vision for enhancement of the site based on the needs of stakeholders, the Merrillville Park Department, Merrillville Community School Corporation, and the Boys and Girls Club. The master plan aims to create an environment for education, conservation, and recreation. The plan proposes a variety of enhancements and facilities in a multi-phase approach, for the new park. The improvements expand facilities for recreational needs of the community while providing opportunities for MIS to develop an environmental education curriculum. The plan elements include:
- Trails: paved (2044’), boardwalk (615’) and recycled tire materials (790’)
- Outdoor Education Center, for science lessons and experiments
- Upland Forest, home to a variety of native trees and shrubs with unique character selected by the students at MIS
- Lake edge and wetland enhancement, removing invasive species and planting of native wetland plants
- Butterfly Garden
- Prairie Garden and rain gardens at several locations in the park
